What is OBDII?
OBD II is an abbreviation for On-Board-Diagnostics second generation. This system has been
government mandated standard equipment on all passenger cars sold in the United States since 1996.
The OBD II system includes self-detection and self-testing functions of power train components and
emission controls that can lead to increased emissions, poor performance and the dreaded
“Check Engine” Malfunction Indicator Light, MIL.
When a car goes into service the OBD II system constantly monitors and tests these systems. If a
problem is detected by the OBD II system the cars computer stores a Diagnostic Trouble Code DTC,
which identifies the component or system when failure occurs.
The OBD II system is responsible, at least in theory, for making sure the car operates, as intended,
at all times. The problem occurs when the car is no longer under warranty, needs to be serviced
by an independent repair shop, or its owner. Until recently there was no practical, inexpensive
tool available to independent technicians or car owners to read and diagnose these trouble codes
or “Check Engine” lights.
We have a great book on the basics of OBDII available on our Pricing & Ordering Page.
This book is designed to give working technicians and advanced enthusiasts a core understanding of
OBD II theories and strategies in the shortest time possible. The inclusion of a comprehensive index
and generic trouble code list make this book useful both as a learning tool and as a quick reference
guide.
Proprietary And Enhanced Codes
As a generic scan tool and for the overwhelming majority of problems IM AutoProbe is the answer,
but for really in depth diagnosis professional technicians like to be able to access these special
manufacturer generated codes.
At IM Technology we are dedicated to providing our customers with all OBD II diagnostic codes. However,
at this time, many automobile manufactures do not yet publicly provide this information through the
standard generic systems or require a huge investment in equipment. Due to pending legislation and
demands from aftermarket automotive industry we believe this situation will change in the near future.
At IM Technology we pledge to stay on top of this issue and to eventually provide all information on these
special manufacturer generated proprietary OBD II codes to those customers who require them. Watch our
Website for news and updates or E-mail us to become part of our mailing list.
See our pricing page for details, packages, and our special introductory offer that will get you
on your way to complete automotive diagnostics at a price anyone can afford.
